Highlighters ‘give back’
February 26, 2021
Highlighters and Life Skills staff hosted their annual Valentine’s dance for life skills students on Friday, Feb. 26th. The dance was postponed from Feb. 15th due to the fact that the snowstorm caused students to miss a week of school. However, the drill team did not let that stop them from having the event which has been a tradition since 2019.
Originally organized by Life Skills teacher Shawna Daughtry, this year marked the 3rd annual Valentine’s Dance that the drill team has hosted under the direction of Katherine Hewitt.
“These students look forward to dancing & singing with the CHHS Drill Team each year,” Daughtry said. “They feel like they are a part of the general population when included.”
Following the 2020 event, the Highlighters received the ‘Giving Back” award at the Gussie Nell Davis Dance Classic competition in Kilgore. The drill team was rewarded with $500 to spend on their next dance. With the prize money, Highlighters purchased decorations and hired a professional DJ for this year’s event.
The Highlighters will hold their annual Spring Show on Fri. April 23rd and Sun. April 25th for the community.
