Student Senate sponsors Tracy Steele and Chalease Denson organize Shoes for Kids every year where all campuses raised money so elementary students can purchase new shoes and go for pizza with high school students. This tradition has taken place at Chapel Hill for 22 years since 1996 where students Libby Bloodsworth and Courtney Bell wanted children in their community to have the opportunity to have new shoes for the Christmas season. Originally cans were put in teacher’s rooms and money was collected. Only a few children benefited that first year, but in 1999 the Spirit Chain contest became a competition fund-raiser between the grades at the high school.

This year, Student Senate raised $8,000 and took over 100 children to the Shoe Department at the mall, CiCi’s for lunch, and then to Discovery Science Center for the afternoon. The field trip days took place the entire week and they even got to go to the movies to see Frozen 2. High school students were paired with elementary students for each day.

“To see all this participation in the community is amazing,” said Student Senate President Angela Daniels. “These kids are loved and now they have shoes for the winter”.

Senate members will also work together with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes organization as they provide gifts for their annual Angel Tree this holiday season.
