UIL Academic and Speaking events advance to Regionals

The UIL District Meet was held at Spring Hill High School on Monday, March 25 where students competed in Academics Events.

Haden Saenz placed 2nd in Current Issues and Events with his coach Mark Kennedy.  Abigail Robertson placed 2nd in Ready Writing with her coach Melissa Avery. Armando Sanchez placed 5th in Calculator Applications. Isaac Frayre placed 5th and JD Reazin placed 6th in Number Sense. Calculator Applications and Number Sense both placed 2nd as a team under the coaching of Robert Walsh. Jesus Villareal placed 2nd in Science with his coach Shannon Snell where they earned a 2nd place team award as well. Haleigh Sanders placed 1st Spelling with her coach Lori Center. Jennifer Thornton placed 2nd in Social Studies with her coach Chad Richardson. Katie Grace Ibarra placed 4th place in Literary Criticism with her coach Kathy Everling.

“I’m so proud of Haleigh placing first”, said Center. “It was such a fun first-time coaching experience for me as well”.

The Speaking events were also held at Spring Hill High School but on Wednesday, April 3. Alexus Miley placed 3rd in Prose and Robbie Wilt placed 4th. Jennifer Thornton placed 6th in Persuasive Extemporaneous Debate.

“I am proud of my placing considering such little time I had to work on it”, said Wilt. “I am so thankful for my Coach, Ms. Westerman and my fellow teammates for their help.”

Competitors who receive 1st, 2nd, or 3rd medals at District automatically advance to Regionals. Sanders, Saenz, Villareal, Miley, Robertson, and Thornton will compete at the UIL Regional Meet at the A&M Commerce campus on April 12-13 in hopes of further advancing to State.
