On Sept. 21 and 22, art students submitted art work to the East Texas State Fair where Hanna Barron received “Best in Show” for her 1st place Tricolor pencil portrait.

Barron was only one out of two to win this honor out of approx 160 2D artworks in the 14-17 yr old category. Haleigh Rolling received “Best in Show” for her 1st place Tricolor book sculpture where she was only one out of two to win this honor out of approx. 50 3D artworks in the 14-17 yr old category.

Floral Design students placed in their artwork and arrangements.  Rolling won a 1st place ribbon for her color pencil of an Orchid. Anna Harris also received a 1st place ribbon for her “Terracing and Layering” Rose arrangement. Angela Daniels won a 3rd place ribbon for her “Round” Fall arrangement and hand-sculpted pumpkin vase. Ester Morales received a 3rd place ribbon for her rose corsage.

Sculpture II and III students, in the 14-17 year old category) included Kortlynn Hayley who won a 1st place ribbon for a wood burning design.  Zamare’a Dunn received 1st place ribbons for a clay sculpture of a woman’s head and for her color-pencil face expressions. Alex Tellez also received a 1st place ribbon for his “Crow” in pencil while Kaitlyn Robeson received one for her painting on wood with 3D nail and string design. Yesenia Ortega won a 2nd place ribbon for a free-standing clay heart sculpture while Makayla Branin received hers for “Feather” in colored pencil. Juan Hernandez also won a 2nd place ribbon for his painting and Kassidy Mumphrey received hers for a clay box sculpture. Daniel Ramirez earned a 3rd place ribbon for his clay relief ‘Pac Man’ sculpture. Dunn’s ‘Man’s Face’ in pencil earned an Honorable Mention in addition to her wins.

Also receiving awards, for Art I and II students in the 14-17 year old category, was Nayelli Mondragon’s 1st place ribbon for a Graffiti in color pencil piece and 2nd place ribbon for her Pencil portrait . Kayleigh Knight won 1st place ribbons for her water-color Sunset and Greenhouse pieces. Gia Huy Phan also won a 1st place ribbon for a Pen and Ink landscape. Martin Mondragon earned a 2nd place ribbon for his color pencil portrait while Kyndal Houff earned hers for a watercolor silhouette piece. Codye Taylor received a 3rd place ribbon for his watercolor silhouette and Dustin Miller received his for a watercolor Sun/Moon piece. Miller also earned an Honorable Mention ribbon for his color pencil portrait.

Teacher, Kimberly Taylor also entered former Sculpture student pieces. Caleb Otte’s clay sculpture of a ‘Man’s Face’ and Makayla Clement’s book sculpture of Roses both earned 1st place ribbons in the 18 and up 3D category.

“I commend the extraordinary work (she) has done with our Art students. The impeccable artistry that I have seen these students accomplish has been above any that I have ever witnessed”, said Assistant Principal Nadia Hall. “I have no doubt that our students are well on their way to being even more amazing.”

Artwork had to be completed in the 2018 year to be submitted. One of the judges is the VASE director of all Region 7 Fine Art schools. The fair is open until Sunday where pieces can be viewed.
