Art students showoff artwork at VASE

Mark Dahlgren and Kim Taylor traveled to Whitehouse High School along with their art students to attend the Visual Art Scholastic Event, also known as VASE Contest on Saturday, Feb 10.
The student’s score was based on their artwork, interview and writing about their art from a single judge. Students had to receive 51—60 points to receive a “Superior” Rating of a “4” to medal. At the end of the contest, all the judges, who are professional artists, get together to deliberate which “4” rated art goes to state. There was over 1,000 artworks from 42 High Schools and only 60 that were selected to go to State which will be held in San Antonio. 46 pieces of Artwork with 31 receiving a “4” and a medal were taken to VASE, and three advanced to State.
The following students received “perfect” scores of “4’s”: Hanna Barron received a ” perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with her 2D art. Micayla Branin received a “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with her 2D art. Makayla Clements received a “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with her 3D art and also entered a 2D piece. Karlea Duhon received a “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with her 3D art. Rhiannon Eastham entered a 3D art piece. Jocelyn Gonzalez entered a 2D art piece. Mallory Kea received a “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with her 3D art, and she also entered a second 3D piece and received another “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points. Anna Nguyen received a “perfect score” of 58 out of 60 points with her 2D art. Sydnee Northcutt received a “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with her 3D art and also entered a second 3D piece. Yesenia Ortega received “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with her 3D art. Caleb Otte received a “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with his 2D art and also entered a second 2D art piece. Azucena Reyes entered a 3d art piece. Max Richardson received a “perfect score” of 59 out of 60 points with his 2D art. Mathew Saucedo entered a 3d art piece. Jazmyn Starks received a “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with her 2D art piece. Afnan Syed entered a 2d art piece. Alex Tellez received a “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with his 2D art piece. Drew Thormer – 3D art – received a “perfect score” of 58 out of 60 points with her 3D art and she also received a “perfect score” of 56 out of 60 points on her second piece that was 2D. Cassidy Willingham received a “perfect score” of 60 out of 60 points with her 3D art piece. Danny Wimpee recieved a “perfect score” of 57 out 60 points with his 2d art piece. Axel Aparicio entered a 2D art piece. Loudes Bustos received a “perfect score” 60 out of 60 points with his 2D art piece. Yasmine Martinez entered a 3D art piece. Bailey Mauldin entered a 2D art piece. Keaona Robertson entered a 2D art piece. Hayleigh Sanders entered a 3D art piece.
“I wasn’t really expecting to advance to State”, said Kea. “So I was really excited when I did”.
The following students all received an “excellent” rating of a “3”, scores (37-50): Dakata Coker entered a 2D art piece. Carissa Dushuanack entered a 2D art piece. Keilah Knight entered a 2D art piece. Alexia Morales entered a 2d art piece. Mary Wages entered a 2D art piece. Jaylin Perez entered a 2D art piece. Hope Shumake entered a 2D art piece. Micayla Branin entered a 2nd piece that was 3D. Alexis Estrada entered a 2D art piece. Angel Halsey entered a 2D art piece. Tony Lugo entered a 2D art piece. Martin Mondragon entered a 2D art piece. Kassidy Mumphrey entered a 2D art piece. Haleigh Rolling entered a 2D art piece.
“Mrs. Taylor and I are very proud of every one of these students for their hard work,” said Dahlgren. “dedication to their artwork and the time they put into their piece! Look for the VASE artwork to be displayed in the case by the front door in the coming days.”
The following Advanced Art and Sculpture students that received “AREA” awards and qualified for state and going to state in April: Makayla Clements qualified for her 3d art. Mallory Kea qualified for her 3d art. Alex Tellez qualified for his 2d art.
