February 13, 2018
Highlighters competed at the Gussie Nell Davis Dance Classic, held at Kilgore College on Saturday. At drill team competitions, dancers compete against other similar team sizes, rather than school sizes. This put the Highlighters in the “large team” category with 35+ members competing with 5A and 6A schools from all over the state.
“The girls brought home 11 awards”, said Highlighter Director Katie Hewitt. “We are very pleased, considering how steep the competition was this year.”
The awards included the Officers Award which was the Sweepstakes (90 or above from every judge, on every routine) , the Judges Award was the Officer Novelty, a Bronze Medal for 1 of 4 distinctions for Best Overall Choreography, one for Best in Class 3rd Runner-Up Team, a Sweepstakes & Gussie Nell Davis Awards of Excellence, a Judges Award which was the Team Novelty, a Judges Award called Team Pom, and a Judges Award for Team Hip Hop. The girls also received a Gold Medal for 3 of 4 distinctions for Best Overall Precision, Best Overall Presentation, and Best Overall Choreography.
Highlighters earned Best in Class 2nd Runner-Up and Best of the Best 5th place, overall, out of all classifications and studios with a total score of 848. Their next competition will be held March 3rd, at Moody Gardens, in Galveston.
