UIL debate team takes tournament

Our UIL debate team competed in Speech and Debate Tournaments in Van on Oct. 7. Tori Bell and Haliegh Sanders placed sixth in Cross-Examination Debate, where they argued policy as a team of two. Michael Ferguson and Payton Wages were also a team in Cross-Examination, where the duo won third place.

“The team did an amazing job,” said coach, Ty Whitworth. “Everyone brought home at least one medal. It was amazing to watch them go from nervous and uncertain when debating to enthusiastic and driven.”

Ferguson placed 5th, Taylor Rasco placed 4th, and Bell placed 1st in the Novice Extemporaneous Speaking event. Wages won 1st place in Varsity Persuasive Speaking.

“Cross-Examination was super fun,” said CX debater Sanders. “I was nervous about my first round but I adjusted quickly.”

The debate team will travel to compete in Mabank on Saturday, Oct. 21.
