Vazia Syeda received 1st place at VASE (Visual Art Scholastic Event) for State competition. Judging took place Sat. April 22 at James Madison High School in San Antonio, TX. Out of the 760 students that went to region, only 35 of these students went to state. There were only a few students, out of the 35, who won at state; one of which was Syeda. “We have one of the best high school artists in the state of Texas right here at Chapel Hill. Vazia spent 6 weeks creating and perfecting this piece of art and she said it represents peace and tranquility. She used Prismacolor Colored pencils on her portrait and butterfly while using Henna ink in the background for original design. Some of the State points were based off her written explanation on the back of her art. The majority of points were for technique and execution of the actual art piece” said Kim Taylor, Art I teacher. A student has to score between 17-20 points to win at state and Syeda received 19 out of 20. “It was hard, but Mrs. Taylor taught me the techniques I needed. She prepared me for the interview which was a part of the scoring. I’m proud of the influence she provided me with”, Syeda said.
